The hidden compromise of choosing a buttercream or semi-naked cake

It's completely understandable to want your wedding cake to work a little harder. Many couples choose a larger buttercream or semi-naked cake because it can become a beautiful focal point, helping to fill a room and even reduce the need for extra venue styling or decorations.

It's a smart idea but it's worth considering one important trade-off.

When and where your cake is displayed really matters

Unlike a fully iced (fondant-covered) cake, buttercream and especially semi-naked cakes are more exposed to the elements. On warm or particularly dry days, buttercream can soften while semi-naked cakes can begin to dry out if they're left on display for too long. To keep your cake looking and tasting its very best, I may recommend displaying it later in the day, keeping it in a cool room until it's ready to be cut, or even bringing the cake out just before your reception.

If your vision is for your cake to take centre stage throughout the day, it's worth thinking about the season, your venue and where the cake will be displayed. Sometimes a fully iced cake offers greater flexibility, allowing it to remain on display for longer without compromising its appearance.

There's no right or wrong choice, just the one that's right for your wedding. My job is to help you weigh up the options so your cake not only looks beautiful but performs beautifully too.

If you're unsure which style of cake is best for your wedding, I'd love to chat. Together we can find the perfect balance between design, practicality and your budget.
